The academic tutors are the very best. With many of them currently teaching or having previously taught and studied at the University of Oxford and/or Cambridge, they are at the forefront of the latest discoveries and cutting-edge research, constantly producing new syllabi to inspire students.
Class sizes are small, with no more than 8 students in each seminar. For students aged 16 and over, 2:1 tutorials are offered which gives an opportunity for the the students and the tutor to enter a detailed discussion and develop critical thinking skills.
Upon completion of the course, a letter of recommendation from the tutor is issued which can be used towards univerity, job and internship applications.

English Plus and English for the Future programmes, based at Lancing College near Brighton, with 20 hours of English lessons per week, is designed for students aged 13-17.

Lancing offers two flagship courses designed to appeal to teenagers aged 13–17. English Plus will enable the students to improve their English skills, immerse themselves in British culture and take part in engaging projects. In addition, students can create a more intensive study programme by choosing one Academic Academy per week in subjects such as Critical Thinking, Essay Writing or Psychology. Cambridge B1, B2 and C1 exam courses are also available in combination with the English Plus course for those wishing to obtain a recognised language qualification. The evening entertainment programme provides an opportunity for recreation and fun and is designed to bring students together in a sociable and stimulating way. Excursions enable students to visit places of interest. These can include a cultural visit to a castle, museum or palace, a visit to a popular tourist attraction such as Big Ben, the London Eye, Madame Tussauds, or something more recreational such as a trip to an aquarium, theme park or zoo. At Benenden, we put sustainability at the heart of what we do; it is central to the way we run our school and to our curriculum. From July 2025, we will be bringing the best of our sustainability projects together in an innovative two-week residential summer programme.
Sustainability is, without a doubt, the key challenge facing today’s world; it will be a primary concern for the next generation of leaders, thinkers, lawyers, architects and entrepreneurs. This course will gather the ambitious young people who will take on those roles and give them the tools they need to come up with solutions to the issues that the businesses, governments and societies of tomorrow will face.
Making use of Benenden’s enquiry-based model, the course offers a project-driven learning experience in which students will be given the tools and opportunity to pursue their own interests and showcase their talents.
Workshops, lectures and independent study sessions throughout the two weeks will supply students with the skills, ideas and knowledge they need to complete an individual and a group project.
The course will make the most of Benenden’s unique position in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the heart of the Wealden Kent countryside. Workshops will take place both on site and off site, with visits to nearby locations such as the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Bedgebury Pinetum.
On-site workshops will take full advantage of Benenden’s 250 acres of stunning Wealden landscape and existing sustainability projects, which include a vegetable garden, bee hives, eco classroom, wildlife cameras and a recently revived orchard.
Students will engage in a full programme of social and sporting activities to complement and provide down-time from their academic pursuits. Our on-site facilities, to which students will have access, include a swimming pool, tennis courts, playing fields and sports hall.

Pathways to Higher Education programme, based at the campus of the University of Sussex in Brighton, with 25 hours of English lessons per week is designed for the older students aged 16-20.
This course is for students who would like to get a taster of life at university and prepare themselves to study abroad. The campus of University of Sussex in Falmer is the only university campus in England that is surrounded by a National Park, so you can walk straight out of the campus into the wonderful Stanmer Park on the South Downs with views of Brighton’s Amex Stadium. The modern campus is just 10 minutes away by train from the cosmopolitan city of Brighton and regularly serviced by buses.
The transition to higher education is a significant moment in a young person’s personal, social and academic development. Pathways to Higher Education are designed to provide academic training and guidance to ease that transition towards higher education in English for both younger and older teenagers. Students on the Pathways to Higher Education course will follow a more intensive academic programme with a focus on exploring the language needed in university contexts as well as a specific subject area in order to fully engage themselves in the preferred field.
This fully-inclusive programme includes age-appropriate social events and recreational activities that make the most of the proximity to Brighton City Centre and coastline. These can include things like outdoor big screen cinema, music concerts, comedy shows, ten-pin bowling or beach visits, designed to immerse students in the English language and culture in a stimulating, fun manner. An intensive two-week IELTS preparation course and exam is also available for students (aged 16+) wishing to gain an internationally recognised qualification and those seeking entry to university in the UK. Brighton offers a single bedroom with en-suite bathroom in a modern student residence on campus. Students will be accommodated in flats with those of a similar age and from different countries.
Each flat has a big common area with a kitchen and sofas and a fridge where students can relax with their friends, as well as a designated study room per floor for quiet self-study. The Sussex University campus offers various eateries and cafés, an IT centre, on-site supermarket, pharmacy, bars, post office, ATM and a sports centre.
These 10-day courses costing £2100 are designed to provide that all important boost for international students before joining a GCSE, A Level or IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma programme in the UK.

For many international students, particularly for those whose proficiency in English is not as high as might be desired, it can be a very daunting task stepping into a British independent boarding school for the first time. Without the necessary linguistic skills and cultural awareness, getting off to a flying start can be extremely challenging.
By attending one of the pre-sessional courses, not only are students able to improve their proficiency in English, but they are also able to develop key academic skills which will equip them well for their onward educational journey.
Pre-sessional courses run for 10 days, in maximum class sizes of 12, with three hours of intensive academic English each morning, followed by two hours of other academic preparation, including lessons, lectures and workshops focusing on the following areas:
Acquiring, recording and learning new vocabulary
Increasing effectiveness in listening skills
Improving academic writing skills (including extended essay writing support)
Developing reading techniques, such as skimming and scanning

Students are also expected to complete set assignments during the evenings in order to maximise the effectiveness of these courses.
Upon completion of one of our pre-sessional courses, students are far more focused, prepared and able to cope with the demands of the GCSE, A Level or IB programme they will move on to, enabling them to hit the ground running and providing them with the necessary academic skills to make the most of their education in the UK.

The modern campus is just 10 minutes away by train from the cosmopolitan city of Brighton and regularly serviced by buses. The transition to higher education is a significant moment in a young person’s personal, social and academic development. Pathways to Higher Education are designed to provide academic training and guidance to ease that transition towards higher education in English for both younger and older teenagers. Students on the Pathways to Higher Education course will follow a more intensive academic programme with a focus on exploring the language needed in university contexts as well as a specific subject area in order to fully engage themselves in the preferred field.

With a maximum class size of 15 students, this two-week programme offers a really exciting opportunity for girls and boys, aged 13 – 17, who are interested in modern science and technology.
Three hours of English lessons take place each day, designed to develop students’ proficiency in all four skills areas of the English language: reading, writing, listening and speaking are all afforded appropriate teaching and learning time, along with vocabulary and pronunciation development.
Complementing the English lessons, students have two hours each day of highly practical and hands on tuition in Science, Technology & Engineering. During their studies, students will investigate, experiment, design and even construct a product, thus following a process from an initial idea to its final completion.
